How to create a simple and charming holiday home
Today I am joining some blogging friends sharing our homes for the holiday season. I am so excited for you to come in and take a tour of our holiday home. I hope this tour inspires you in your Christmas decoration this season. Welcome, grab a cup of something warm to drink and sit back while I share how to create a simple and charming holiday home.
Using things I already had in different ways is always a fun part of holiday decorating.
Let’s see how I created a simple and charming style.
Holiday home theme
For the last few years I have had different themes for my holiday decor but this year I just wanted to keep things simple and charming.
How to create a simple and charming holiday home
Christmas is a time of celebration and remembrance of Christmas past . Here is how to create a simple and charming holiday home.
- use items from previous Christmas
- create a welcoming from door and entry
- using ornaments made by your children or that have meaning
- if using a faux tree, add pieces of real greenery around the home
- add simple, unique touches in each space in your home
- creating a space that is special to you and your family
- add small vignette on outside spaces
- white lights throughout your home to bring in that warm feeling
- adding handmade pieces from family and friends
I did not want to create an over the top Christmas theme this year. It is such a busy time anyway, keeping it simple was what I needed and may be what you need as well.
Charming front door
My decor this year does not adhere to a particular theme other than simple and charming. The decor is still a bit muted to keep it cohesive throughout the house.
I decided to use only what I already had on hand and have only purchased one new holiday candle.
The best place to start with you holiday home is at the front door.
I always love to greet guest with a welcoming holiday wreath, the one I used this year is the same one I have used for the past three plus years, and it remains a favorite.
If you are looking for ways to update an old wreath, this post is a great place to start.
If something works, there is no need to change it in any way. It really is ok to use the same thing from year to year, even though social media makes us feel otherwise. I agree it is fun to do something different every year, but that becomes very expensive and is really unnecessary.
In order to keep things simple I just wanted to sprinkle holiday decor throughout the house in charming ways.
After walking through the front door you enter directly into the main entryway.
Simple entryway
When you walk into our home you enter immediately into the dining room where there is a large buffet console table.
I decorated it with a simple vintage grapevine tree with a really cool metal stand. This piece has been in my collection for several years and I absolutely adore it.
You can see here how I used this vintage grapevine tree a few years ago.
With the addition of a favorite candle and a few Christmas books, that is all this entry needed to bring in the charming holiday feel to the space.
Charming kitchen decor
One of my favorite things to do is to add real greenery that I get from friends who use real trees. I use this greenery all throughout the house. This helps to distribute the aroma of pine and ads that natural touch that I love so much.
This is such a simple thing to do and here you can see where I have added it to the kitchen and bathroom.
Even though I am using a faux tree, using the fresh greenery helps to bring in the natural elements that I love so much.
Outdoor holiday decor
Don’t forget to add some simple decor with real greenery to your outdoor spaces.
Outside on the screened in porch I added a vintage galvanized bucket, a nutcracker and light I have had for many years.
Styling this porch makes it a cozy and charming spot for late afternoon tea or coffee, even when it is cooler outside.
Adding homemade elements
One of the things that really adds to the charm of your Christmas style is using special, handmade pieces in your decor.
Pieces that were made by your children, friends or family members. These pieces help to create memories in your season, while making it extra special.
The Santa piece was made by a special friends mother and is perfect on this little table with a faux tabletop tree.
This little snowman light was made by a coworkers special needs brother and I love bringing it out in the kitchen every year regardless of what my holiday theme is.
When incorporating the things that have meaning to you and your family it automatically creates a simple and charming holiday home.
Charming and cozy elements
Last but not least is to bring out your favorite blankets and holiday pillows.
I love using neutral pillows during the holidays that can work with any holiday theme.
Both of these pillows I have had for several years and have used them all over the house over the years.
It really does not take much to create a simple and charming holiday home by using things that are special to you and your family.
Not over complicating the holidays helps to us to remember the true meaning of the holiday.
