How to create a pedestal tray with scrap wood
Creating little vignettes in your home is easy when you have the right items to use. I joined some talented blogging friends in a DIY challenge of creating our version of a pedestal tray.I am sharing how to use scrap wood to create a pedestal try.

Raised pedestal trays have been popular in home decor for quite some time and I cant see the trend ending any time soon.
They are really not difficult to make.
I am sharing how to create a pedestal with scrap wood.
Supplies for pedestal tray
For this particular pedestal I am using some left over scrap cedar I had from visiting my step mothers family farm last Christmas.
You can use any type of wood that you may have already or get a small piece at the hardware store.
- wood of your choice
- small wooden legs (from Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Etsy)
- dowel wood screws
- wood glue
- paint or stain
Once you have all your supplies for a basic pedestal then it is time to begin.
Creating your scrap wood pedestal
Once you have your supplies you need to figure out the size and shape of your particular pedestal.
Measure and cut it to the size and shape you want.
For mine I wanted it to be more of a rectangle shape than a square and just winged the size.
Honestly I grabbed my favorite decor book and used that to measure the size I thought would be good.
Nothing to technical here, keeping it easy and real.

I marked it with a pencil where I wanted to cut straight across and used my Black and Decker jigsaw to cut it.
You will notice that my sides are not perfectly straight.
At first I thought about fixing that but then decided to keep my wood raw and unfinished and felt the imperfect sides added some character to it.
After the sides are cut, lightly sand the edges to take the rough edge off a bit.
You will then want to decide where your legs will go depending on the their diameter.
Once you figure the placement of your legs, mark it with a pencil.
Prepare your legs for the pedestal
Before you attached your legs it is a good idea to stain them.
I used the Minwax stain in Weathered Oak to stain only the legs.
You may decide to paint yours.
Do what makes you happy and goes with your decor style.

Once the legs are stained or painted and have dried completely, it is safe to attach them.
Attaching the legs to your wood pedestal
There are really two ways to attach the legs, using a dowel wood screw or wood glue.
Choose which is easiest for you to use when making your pedestal.
If using dowel screws you will need to predrill your holes in the wood.
The legs should already have predrilled holes for you to use.
For this particular pedestal, I used wood glue in the interest of time.
Be sure to double check your placement before attaching.

Now time to style your scrap wood pedestal tray.
Ways to style your scrap wood pedestal
One thing that makes the pedestal tray so popular is that they can be used in so many different ways.
They are so fun to use in any and every space in your home.
Use it to style your bathroom soaps and a hand towel.

Take them into the kitchen to place your kitchen soap and scrub brushes on with a candle.

Displaying seasonal items in your kitchen or dining room table.
You can also use this as a riser on your dining room table when you entertain.
