How to update a store bought Christmas wreath
Everyone is decorating their homes for the holidays and today I am decorating my front door and porch area. I did not want to spend any money and came up with some ways that updating a store bought Christmas wreath will bring it back to life.
Welcome to the Celebrate Christmas blog hop. If you are here from Jen at Notinggrace, welcome, I am so glad you are here.
Thank you to Leen at Sanddollarlane and Amy at Attagirlsays for all your work in putting this tour together.
Decorating for the holidays is so much fun but let’s be honest it can become very expensive if you are purchasing several new decor items in addition to gifts.
The other day when I went into the attic to get out some decor for the front porch I was feeling the need for something new.
My outdoor decor items have been used for several years and needed a little something.
Instead of purchasing something new I decided to update what I had.
I had some leftover trimmings from my tree and some preserved leaves and felt like I could bring the wreath back to life.
What I used for the update
- preserved magnolia leaves (see my tutorial here)
- floral wire (used a piece from the original bow)
- real frasier fir branches (from our tree)
- ribbon
- garden shears
Wreath before
You see here, there was nothing wrong with the wreath, it was just looking a little tired and needed an update.
I wanted to give a more realistic feel to it while creating a different look than previous years.
This quick and simple update made it feel new and fresh.
Updating process
First thing I needed to do was deconstruct the wreath a bit by removing some of the decor that was on it originally.
First I removed some of the pinecones leaving just a few.
Then I removed all the faux magnolia leaves.
Be careful when taking a wreath apart so it does not become damaged in the process.
Once the unwanted decor was removed it was time to start updating the store bought wreath.
Time to refresh
On with the fun part, adding in some real leaves and greenery.
I used preserved magnolia leaves that I did a week or so ago.
Figure out the placement of your preserved magnolia leaves, you can read how I preserved mine here.
Use floral wire to attach the magnolia leaves where ever you would like them placed.
If you are using pine cones you can glue them and add floral wire for added security since they can be heavy.
For mine I ended up leaving some of the original pinecones so I skipped this step.
After getting the magnolia leaves and pinecones secured I added in some real frasier fir.
You can use can use any type of greenery you have available.
You can get really creative here and make your wreath fit your decor style or to match your outdoor colors.
After everything is secured, it is time to update the ribbon.
Refreshing your wreath with ribbon
For the ribbon I went into my stash to find something that I liked and felt fit in as understated, simple, yet elegant style.
I love simple style so I picked a simple ribbon.
Instead of floral wire here I used the wire that held the original buffalo check ribbon and it looked like a twig.
Elegant and simple, which is perfect for my updated store bought Christmas wreath.
I used the twig wire to attach it and the wreath was done.
Even though there was nothing wrong with how the wreath looked originally I am really glad I did a simple update.
I added in a few simple touches to the front porch by adding my white rain boots planter.
Added in some fresh greens and the pinecones I took off the original wreath and the porch was done.
I hope this simple update inspires you to refresh one of your store bought Christmas wreaths.
