Creating family traditions with a diy patriotic tablecloth is super easy and a fun way to include everyone.
Can you believe that it is almost summer and the 4th of July?
When summer rolls around we are reminded of fun family traditions that we started several years ago.
Creating traditions add meaning to celebrations and help us to bond with those we love.
Today I am joining some amazing blogging friends in sharing our 4th of July decor and diy’s.
Thank you to Kippi at Kippi at Home for putting this wonderful blog hop together.
If you are here came over Niky’s from House of Silverado, welcome I am so glad you are here.
I am sharing a simple way you too can begin creating traditions with a diy painted tablecloth.
DIY 4th of July tablecloth
Nine years ago my first and dearest friend in our neighborhood was relocating to Florida with her family and we were planning our last get together in the neighborhood.
It just happened to be near the 4th of July.
I knew that I wanted it to be something special that we could continue the tradition well after they moved away.
A tablecloth with our hand prints, names and the year the tradition started.
This is an easy, yet memorable way to begin a tradition by adding new names every year.

Supplies needed
- an all white 100 percent cotton tablecloth in the size needed for your tablecloth
- Fabric paint in red, white and blue
- Silver fabric marker used to outline the fireworks (you can also use gold)
- star shaped cookie cutters of of varying sizes
Directions
- first in the center of the tablecloth decide what you want to say. For ours we wrote out USA and the year surrounded by red, white and blue stars.
- trace everyone’s hand with the silver fabric marker and paint in the hand with the three colors.
- once the paint is dry, go back to write their name in the center of the hand. (be sure to keep a note of whose hand it is so you know after it dries)
- make stars and paint them in with the red, white and blue paint, varying the colors all over the tablecloth
- create firecrackers and fill them in with paint (just free hand the firecrackers)
- draw anything that you feel relates to the 4th
This is a fun and simple diy that creates a neat memory filled tablecloth.
Every year add more names of new people at your gatherings, be sure to add the year.
Creating traditions for your family is a great way to give your children something they can continue with their friends and family giving them a sense of connection.

what a great idea! I wish I would have done this when my parents were still alive! thanks for sharing!
Kimberly thank you so much, I am so glad I have my parents handprints on the tablecloth as well as my childrens little hands.
What a wonderful tradition you started with friends who moved away. You are reminded of your sweet friends every time you use the tablecloth. I think this would be a fun tradition for a Thanksgiving or Christmas tablecloth too.
Happy hopping with you.
Hugs,
Kippi
Thank you Kippi, i love looking at my kids small handprints and compare them to the current year. The memories of that first year with our friends will always be a special memory when we started this with our family. So happy I got to hop with you.
What a sweet idea! So much fun to do this hop together.
Thank you so much Marie, it was fun hopping with you.
Sonya, this is such a great idea! I will have to start one of these the next time my family is all together. I’m thinking we’ll label the hands with the persons name and the year and add more handprints to it each year. It’ll be a fun way to watch as all of our kids get bigger each year! Such a great project idea, thank you for sharing 🙂
Hi Allison, thank you. That is what we do every year we add more handprints to compare the years past. Such a great way to create something to document special times.
What a wonderful idea, Sonya! I love the idea of creating a holiday keepsake and would love to do this with our family and friends. It is always fun to hop with you, my friend! xo
Thank you so much Lynne, it is always fun hopping with you and I hope you start this tradition with your family. I love pulling it out every year and look at it while adding to it.
I love this idea, Sonya! What a great way to get the kids involved with the holiday and to make something memorable. Thanks for the inspiration! It was fun hopping with you 🙂
Always fun hopping with you Rebecca and thank you. I will always treasure our special tablecloth and pass it down so the kids can enjoy it for years to come.
This is such a cute idea!! A fun, sentimental craft that’s also functional. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much Olivia, we love pulling it out every year.
