How to simplify your home in the new year
This is the most popular time of year to begin new things, like working out, getting out of debt etc. I felt led to help you and myself with how to simplify your home in the new year.
This post is simply the introduction to the series we will be doing together this new year.
If you are like me you seem to have accumulated a lot of stuff in our homes, this is the perfect time to clear out the clutter.
Stuff takes our time and energy to maintain and store.
This stuff managing of items with no real purpose or use, adds to our stress.
Consider why you should simplify
Having our homes filled with items that are not being used or do not add value to our homes and lives, creates a weight.
Even if your items are stored in cabinets, closets or in the attic out of sight, they add weight on our shoulders.
This weight creates stress and adds to the consumeristic mentality of our current society.
A cycle of purchasing or collecting things for our homes that really do not add value to our lives.
During this series we will walk through getting rid of things that really do not add value.
I am not talking about getting rid of everything you have or collect, I am referring to how to simplify your home in the new year by having less.
Some things to consider before we get started next week.
Thoughts before simplifying and decluttering our homes
There are three things to consider before we begin the process of decluttering to simplify our homes in the new year.
Over the weekend, take stock of the things you own and store.
Consider:
- what you have
- why you have it
- how would it affect you and your home to get rid of it
It might be a good idea to keep a journal as you are going through your home considering every room and the items in that space.
Remember to look in closets and attics.
Those spaces generally have many items that we have not used in a long time.
Keeping notes of items you have that have not been used.
Here is another post on the subject that may interest you.
How to begin the declutter and simplifying process
Using your notes from going through your home and belongings figure which space or area would be the easiest to tackle.
We are going to start with that space.
Starting with the smallest or least disorganized or cluttered will help you build momentum in this simplifying journey.
Another great thing in starting small is that it creates a sense of accomplishment and gives the incentive to move onto those larger more daunting areas.
Your simplifying timeline
We will all begin working on our smallest spaces and then get together on some larger spaces during this series.
Be ready next week to come back and get started on our smaller spaces to get us started on the path to a more simple and joyous life.
On a side note this will not be about purchasing systems to help us organize unless that is truly something that is needed.
We can all simplify our homes mostly without purchasing a thing and will talk about that as well.
Simplifying our homes in the new year will give us the space to live big.
If you are ringing in the New Year on a wellness journey this article and series is for you.
Till next time
